Parli Vaijnath Temple, Maharashtra

Parli Vaijnath Temple

Held in regional tradition as the seat of the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga.

At Parli in the Beed district of Maharashtra stands the Vaijnath (Vaidyanath) temple, revered in the Maharashtra tradition as a Jyotirlinga of Shiva worshipped as the divine physician, Vaidyanath, healer of all afflictions. Set upon a low hill and rebuilt in later centuries — its restoration associated with the devotion of the queen Ahilyabai Holkar — the temple is a major Shaiva pilgrimage of the Marathwada region.

Devotees revere the Lord here for healing and wellbeing, and the shrine is thronged especially through the sacred month of Shravan and at Maha Shivaratri; a tradition unique to Parli allows devotees to touch the linga during worship. Parli Vaijnath is among the most beloved Shiva temples of Maharashtra, cherished as an abode of the Lord who heals.

The Jyotirlinga (regional alternate)

Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, a few names are claimed by more than one shrine, each held by its own region as the place where that light appeared.
