Aundha Nagnath Temple, Maharashtra

Aundha Nagnath Temple

Held in regional tradition as the seat of the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.

At Aundha in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra stands the ancient Nagnath (Nageshwar) temple, a revered Shiva shrine of great antiquity, celebrated in the regional tradition as a Jyotirlinga and, by some accounts, as the first (aadi) among them. Tradition links its origin to the Pandavas, and its finely carved stone structure reflects the artistry of the Yadava era.

The temple was dear to the saints of the Varkari and Nath traditions, and the great saint Namdev is associated with it in beloved legend. Set in the Marathwada countryside, richly sculpted and steeped in devotion, Aundha Nagnath is among the most venerable Shiva temples of Maharashtra, drawing pilgrims especially through the month of Shravan and at Maha Shivaratri.

The Jyotirlinga (regional alternate)

Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, a few names are claimed by more than one shrine, each held by its own region as the place where that light appeared.
