Sri Vidya

Sri Vidya is the tradition that worships the Goddess as Lalita Tripurasundari, the beautiful one of the three worlds, and holds that the whole world is her manifestation. It is a Tantric tradition of the Shakta stream, and its name is also one of the Goddess's own: Sri Vidya, the auspicious knowledge, is among her thousand names in the Lalita Sahasranama.

The tradition reads the Lalita Sahasranama of the Brahmanda Purana as one of its central texts, and in the eighteenth century Bhaskararaya wrote the Saubhagya Bhaskara, a commentary on its thousand names. Its emblem is the Sri Chakra: nine triangles interlock around a central point, the bindu — four of Shiva pointing upward and five of Shakti pointing downward — ringed by lotuses of eight and sixteen petals and set within a square with four gates. The Soundarya Lahari, attributed by tradition to Adi Shankaracharya, counts these triangles and petals in its eleventh verse.

In this collection, tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya installed the Sri Chakra before Kamakshi at Kanchipuram, whose temple is a living centre of Sri Vidya worship. At Ambaji in Gujarat and at Kalimath in the Himalaya, the Goddess is worshipped through a Shri Yantra, the same figure, in place of an image; the Lalita Devi temple at Prayagraj honours her as Lalita Tripurasundari, and the Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur in Tripura honours her as Shodashi. At Dasara, the Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada adorns the Goddess as Lalita Tripurasundari on one of the festival's days.
