Yugadya (Khirgram) Temple

Where a ten-armed image is held submerged, the Mother who begins each age.

At Khirgram in the Purba Bardhaman district, near Katwa, stands the Yugadya (Jogadya) Shakti Peetha. In the tradition of the Peethas the accounts vary — some texts hold that the back of Sati fell here, others the big toe of the right foot — and the Goddess is worshipped as Yugadya, revered as the Mother who ushers in each new age (yuga), with Ksheerkhandak as her Bhairava.

The striking ten-armed black-stone image of the Devi is, by long tradition, kept submerged in the nearby Kshiradighi tank and brought up for darshan on special occasions. Ancient in origin and named in old Bengali texts, Yugadya is among the venerable Shakti Peethas of the Bardhaman region.
