Vibhash (Kapalini) Temple

On the Rupnarayan at Tamralipta, the fierce Mother worshipped as Bhimarupa.

On the bank of the Rupnarayan river at Tamluk — the ancient port-city of Tamralipta — in the Purba Medinipur district, stands the Bargabhima temple, revered as the Vibhash Shakti Peetha. In the tradition of the Peethas, the left ankle of Sati fell here, and the Goddess is worshipped in her fierce forms as Kapalini, Bhimarupa, and Bargabhima (Bhimakali), with Sarvananda as her Bhairava.

Ancient and deeply venerated, the temple is one of the oldest living shrines of the region, its Goddess associated with the energy of movement and of liberation from all that binds. Bargabhima of Tamluk is a principal Shakti seat of coastal Bengal, thronged during Kali Puja and Navaratri.
