Sugandha (Sunanda) Shakti Peeth

A Shakti seat on the Sonda river, with Trayambak as her Bhairava.

At Shikarpur near Barisal in southern Bangladesh, on the bank of the Sonda (Sugandha) river, is revered the Sugandha Shakti Peetha. In the tradition of the Peethas, the nose of Sati fell here, and the Goddess is worshipped as Sunanda, with Trayambak as her Bhairava.

The shrine, associated with the temple of Ugratara, is among the Shakti seats of the Bengal delta that lie today in Bangladesh, and remains a place of devotion for the region's Hindu community. Sugandha is honoured among the fifty-one seats of the Mother, marking the eastern spread of her sacred geography.
