Shankari Devi Temple

On Swami Rock above the sea, a Maha Shakti Peetha named Lankayam Shankari.

At Trincomalee on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, near the great Koneswaram Shiva temple on Swami Rock above the sea, is revered the seat of Shankari Devi — named first in Adi Shankaracharya's Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram, "Lankayam Shankari." In the tradition of the Peethas, a part of Sati's sacred form fell here.

The ancient shrine was lost to the passage of history, its cliffside setting altered over the centuries, yet its place among the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas keeps its memory sacred, and worship of the Goddess continues in the vicinity. Shankari of Lanka marks the far southern reach of the Mother's abodes across the subcontinent.

The Shakti Peeth

The Shakti Peethas are the seats of the Goddess, revered as the places where the earth itself was hallowed by her presence.
