Patneshwari (Magadh) Temple

At ancient Pataliputra, the Mother as Kali, Lakshmi, and Saraswati.

In the ancient city of Patna, Bihar — the old Pataliputra — the Patan Devi temple is revered as a Shakti Peetha where, in the tradition of the Peethas, the right thigh of Sati fell. The Goddess is worshipped as Patneshwari, or Patan Devi, and tradition holds that the city of Patna itself takes its name from her.

Her worship spans two shrines, the Badi Patan Devi and the Chhoti Patan Devi a few kilometres apart, and within the sanctum the Mother is honoured in her threefold form as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. The kuladevi of the city, Patneshwari is invoked especially on Tuesdays and through Navaratri, and is among the most venerable Shakti seats of the Magadha region.
