Nandikeshwari Temple

Worshipped as Nandini who gives joy, a Shakti Peetha of the necklace.

At Nandipur in the town of Sainthia, on the bank of the Mayurakshi river in Birbhum, stands the Nandikeshwari Shakti Peetha. In the tradition of the Peethas, the necklace (haar) of Sati fell here, and the Goddess is worshipped as Nandini — she who gives joy — and as Nandikeshwari, the one revered by Nandi, with Nandikeshwar as her Bhairava; the twin names reflect how Shiva and Shakti are ultimately one.

Within the do-chala-styled sanctum the Mother is honoured as a self-manifested black rock, set with three golden eyes and a silver crown, turned bright red by the countless offerings of vermilion. Nandikeshwari is a deeply beloved seat of the Devi among the Shakti Peethas of Birbhum.
