Mahamaya (Amarnath area) Shakti Peeth

At the ice cave of Amarnath, where the throat of Sati fell.

Amid the high Himalayas of Kashmir, at the sacred Amarnath cave famed for its naturally forming ice lingam of Shiva, is revered a Shakti Peetha where, in the tradition of the Peethas, the throat of Sati fell. The Goddess is worshipped as Mahamaya, with Trisandhyeshwar as her Bhairava.

Reached only by an arduous mountain pilgrimage open in the brief summer, the cave unites the darshan of Shiva as the ice lingam with the presence of the Mother as Mahamaya. This lofty Himalayan seat is among the most awe-inspiring of all the abodes of the Goddess, its high-altitude access possible only in season.
