In central Delhi stands the Jhandewalan Devi temple, a revered shrine of the Goddess whose name recalls a sacred flag (jhanda). Tradition tells of a devotee who, guided by a dream, discovered the ancient image of the Mother buried beneath the earth at this spot, along with a flag — and so the Goddess came to be worshipped as Jhandewali Mata, the Lady of the Flag.
A much-loved centre of Devi worship in the heart of the capital, the temple draws great crowds of devotees, especially through the Navaratri seasons. Jhandewalan Devi is honoured as a compassionate and protective Mother, and her shrine is among the most frequented of Delhi's temples.
