Jayanti Temple (Nartiang Durga)

A seat of the Mother among the Jaintia Hills, guardian of their kings.

At Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya stands the Durga temple, revered as the Jayanti Shakti Peetha — a seat of the Mother in the far Northeast. In the tradition of the Peethas, the left thigh of Sati fell here, and the Goddess is worshipped as Jayanti (Jainteswari), with Kramadishwar as her Bhairava.

For some six centuries the Goddess has been honoured here as the guardian deity of the Jaintia kings, worshipped in the form of Durga through the great autumn festival of Durga Puja. Set amid the monolith-dotted landscape of Nartiang, the temple is a rare and precious Shakti seat in the Northeast, uniting the pan-Indian tradition of the Peethas with the living culture of the Jaintia people.
