Jashoreshwari Kali Temple

Where the palms of Sati fell, the Devi of Jessore is worshipped as Kali.

At Ishwaripur in the Satkhira district of southern Bangladesh stands the ancient temple of Jashoreshwari Kali, revered as a Shakti Peetha where, in the tradition of the Peethas, the palms of Sati's hands fell. The Goddess is worshipped as Jashoreshwari — the Devi of Jessore — from whom the region takes its name.

The old temple is linked in tradition to the rulers of medieval Jessore and remains an important centre of Kali worship for the Hindu community of Bangladesh. Jashoreshwari is honoured among the fifty-one seats of the Mother in the eastern Bengal delta.
