In Kathmandu, Nepal, close to the great Pashupatinath temple on the bank of the Bagmati, stands the revered temple of Guhyeshwari, one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas of the Himalayan kingdom. In the tradition of the Peethas, the knees (or hips) of Sati fell here, and the Goddess is worshipped as Guhyeshwari — a form of Mahamaya — honoured as the very Shakti of Pashupatinath.
The Mother is venerated in a covered sanctum as a sacred kalasha and spring rather than an image. Deeply holy to Hindus of both Nepal and India, Guhyeshwari is a central seat of the Goddess in the Kathmandu valley.
