Brajeshwari (Kangra) Devi Temple

In the Kangra valley, the Mother honoured each dawn with fresh butter.

At Nagarkot in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh stands the ancient temple of Brajeshwari Devi, revered as a Shakti Peetha where, in the tradition of the Peethas, the left breast of Sati fell. The Goddess is worshipped as Brajeshwari (Vajreshwari), with Baba Lal Bhairav as her guardian Bhairava.

In centuries past the temple was renowned across the land for its great wealth and splendour, drawing pilgrims from far and wide. A distinctive rite is observed here at Makar Sankranti, when the Goddess is honoured with an offering of butter, said to soothe her. Rebuilt in later times, the shrine remains a central seat of the Devi in the Kangra hills.

Brajeshwari is worshipped as a Mother of abundance and strength, and her temple is a cherished part of the Himachal Devi pilgrimage, often visited with Jwalamukhi and Chamunda Devi nearby.
