Goswami Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, setting the account of Rama into doha and chaupai so that it could be sung and heard rather than only read. It is arranged in seven kands, of which the Sundarkand — Hanuman's crossing to Lanka — is recited on its own. The work carried the Ramayana into the everyday speech of northern India.

The Ramcharitmanas is not a translation of Sage Valmiki. Goswami Tulsidas composed it afresh in Awadhi in the sixteenth century, so that people could hear Rama's story in their own speech.
