The Mahabharata is attributed to Sage Veda Vyasa and is set out in eighteen parvas, following the Kuru lineage to the field of Kurukshetra and past it. Within it sit the Bhagavad Gita, in the Bhishma Parva, and the Vishnu Sahasranama, in the Anushasana Parva. Its Shanti Parva turns after the war to how a king and a householder are to live.
