At Suchindram near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu stands the remarkable Thanumalayan temple, unique in enshrining the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — together in a single linga, worshipped as Sthanumalayan (Sthanu for Shiva, Mal for Vishnu, Ayan for Brahma). Its very name, Suchindram, is said to recall Indra, who was purified (suchi) of a curse by worshipping here.
The temple is famed for its extraordinary art: musical pillars carved from single blocks of stone, a towering gopuram, and a great image of Hanuman. Rich with legend and sculpture and set near the meeting of the seas, Thanumalayan of Suchindram unites the three great powers of the divine in one sanctum, and is among the most distinctive temples of the far South.
