Beside the great Sivasagar tank in the town of Sivasagar in Assam rises the Sivadol, revered as among the tallest Shiva temples in India. Built in 1734 by Ambika, the queen of the Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha, the towering dome (dol) crowned with a golden kalasha is a magnificent monument of the Ahom age, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Standing with its companion temples of Vishnu and Durga beside the vast tank, the Sivadol is both a living place of worship, thronged especially at Shivaratri, and a proud emblem of Assam's heritage. It is among the most striking and beloved shrines of the Northeast.
