Shankaracharya Temple, Srinagar

A hill of stone steps above the Dal Lake, where Shiva is Jyeshteshwara.

On the Shankaracharya hill rising above Srinagar and the Dal Lake in Kashmir stands the ancient Shankaracharya temple, one of the oldest shrines of the valley, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Jyeshteshwara. Reached by a long climb of stone steps, the temple crowns the summit with a commanding view over the city, the lake, and the surrounding mountains.

The shrine takes its name from the great teacher Adi Shankaracharya, who, tradition holds, visited and meditated here during his journeys across India. Ancient, serene, and majestically set, the Shankaracharya temple is among the most revered and beloved landmarks of Kashmir.
