At Sakshigopal near Puri in Odisha stands the temple of Krishna as Sakshi Gopal — 'Gopal the Witness.' Its beloved legend, dear to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, tells of two brahmins, one of whom promised his daughter to the other; when the promise was later denied, the young devotee called upon Krishna himself, and the Lord, as a witness, walked from Vrindavan to testify to the truth — remaining thereafter as Sakshi Gopal.
An important shrine on the pilgrimage to Puri, the temple honours the Lord who upholds truth and keeps faith with his devotees, and is among the cherished Krishna shrines of Odisha.
