At Ramdevra near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan stands the shrine of Baba Ramdev (Ramdevji), a revered folk-deity and saint of the fifteenth century, honoured as an incarnation of Krishna and beloved across communities as a champion of the poor and the oppressed. A prince who worked miracles and preached the equality of all before God, he is venerated by Hindus and Muslims alike, who honour his samadhi at Ramdevra.
His symbol, the sacred footprints, and his message of compassion draw immense crowds, above all at the great Bhadrapada fair, when pilgrims walk long distances bearing flags to his shrine. Baba Ramdev of Ramdevra is among the most beloved folk-saints of the desert land.
