At Datia in Madhya Pradesh stands the Pitambara Peeth, one of the most revered centres of Shakta tantric worship in modern India. Established in the twentieth century by a great siddha ascetic known as Swamiji Maharaj, the peeth is dedicated to the Goddess Bagalamukhi — the golden-hued Pitambara, one of the ten Mahavidyas, invoked for victory over adversity and for protection — and is also home to one of the very few temples of the profound Mahavidya Dhumavati.
Though not among the ancient Sati Peethas, Pitambara Peeth is honoured as a living siddhapeeth of great spiritual power, drawing seekers from across the country, especially for its potent yantra worship and sacred fire rites.
