On the bank of the Lohit river in the Anjaw region of Arunachal Pradesh lies Parshuram Kund, one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites of the Northeast, revered in tradition as the place where the sage-avatar Parashurama washed away the sin of a grave deed — and where, the legend tells, the axe that had clung to his hand at last fell free, purified in these waters.
Each year at Makar Sankranti, great numbers of pilgrims journey to this remote and beautiful spot to take a holy dip in the sacred kund, seeking release from sin. Set amid forested Himalayan foothills, Parshuram Kund is among the most venerated tirthas of Arunachal Pradesh.
