Kailasanathar Temple, Thingalur (Chandra / Moon)

The Navagraha shrine of the Moon, freed here from the curse of Daksha.

At Thingalur near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, the Kailasanathar temple is the Navagraha Sthala sacred to Chandra, the Moon. Here, tradition holds, Chandra worshipped Shiva to be freed from the curse of Daksha that had dimmed his light, and so was restored. A Paadal Petra Sthalam sung in the Tevaram, the temple is associated with the Nayanar saint Appoothi Adigal.

Devotees come to propitiate the Moon, which governs the mind and the emotions, seeking peace and relief from its afflictions, especially on Mondays. Thingalur is the shrine of the Moon among the nine planetary temples.

The Navagraha (Tamil Nadu)

Around the town of Kumbakonam in the Kaveri delta lie nine temples, each linked to one of the Navagraha — the nine celestial powers that tradition holds to shape the courses of life: the Sun and Moon, the five planets, and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
