In a serene valley of deodar cedars near Almora in Uttarakhand stands Jageshwar Dham, one of the most remarkable temple complexes of the Himalayas — a cluster of over a hundred ancient stone shrines, large and small, raised between about the seventh and twelfth centuries by the Katyuri and Chand dynasties. The presiding deity is Shiva, worshipped here as Jageshwar (Yogeshwar), the Lord of Yogis, and the site is revered in tradition as a great Shaiva kshetra, counted by some among the Jyotirlingas.
Set amid towering cedars in a tranquil mountain glen, the temples are masterworks of early Himalayan stone architecture, their spires rising among the trees. Jageshwar unites profound antiquity, natural beauty, and living worship, and is among the most atmospheric of all the Shiva shrines of Uttarakhand.
