In the old city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat stands the Jagannath temple, one of the most important shrines of the state, dedicated to Lord Jagannath — Krishna — worshipped, as at Puri, together with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. Grown over a century and a half under its line of mahants, the temple is famed above all for its grand Rath Yatra, one of the largest in India after Puri's, when the three deities ride in great chariots through the streets amid immense crowds.
A beloved centre of devotion and of charitable service, the Jagannath temple of Ahmedabad is deeply woven into the life of the city.
