At Hajo near Guwahati in Assam stands the Hayagriva Madhava temple, an ancient stone shrine set upon the Manikuta hill, where Vishnu is worshipped as Hayagriva Madhava. The temple is remarkable for the reverence it draws from more than one faith: many Buddhists hold it sacred as a place associated with the Buddha, worshipping alongside Hindu devotees in a rare confluence of traditions.
Built of stone and rich with carving, the temple is deeply venerated across the region. Set amid the green hills near the Brahmaputra, Hayagriva Madhava of Hajo is among the most ancient and cherished shrines of Assam.
