In the city of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh — which takes its very name from him — stands the great Gorakhnath temple, the principal seat of the Nath yogic tradition and the shrine of Guru Gorakhnath, the revered master-yogi honoured as a manifestation of Shiva. The sprawling complex, centred on the sacred spot where the Guru is said to have practised his austerities, is a living centre of the Nath order and its ascetic discipline.
The temple is famed for its great Khichdi mela at Makar Sankranti, when vast numbers of pilgrims come to offer khichdi to the Guru. Gorakhnath of Gorakhpur is among the most important centres of yogic devotion in North India.
