Chandrika Devi Temple, Lucknow

A form of Durga radiant as the moon, on the bank of the Gomti.

On the bank of the Gomti river near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh stands the Chandrika Devi temple, an ancient and revered shrine of the Goddess, worshipped here as Chandrika Devi, a benign form of Durga radiant as the moon. Tradition links its origin to the age of the Ramayana, holding it to have been established by Lakshmana's son.

Set amid a quiet, forested riverside, the temple draws great crowds of devotees, especially on the moonless nights of Amavasya and through the Navaratri seasons. Chandrika Devi is among the most beloved Devi shrines of the Awadh country, sought for the Mother's protection and grace.
