By the sacred Pushkar lake in Rajasthan stands the Brahma temple, one of the very few temples anywhere in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator among the Hindu trinity. Tradition holds that Brahma performed a great yagna here, and that Pushkar became his earthly abode — so sacred that a pilgrimage to it is counted among the holiest a devotee can make.
The temple, marked by its red spire and the image of the swan, the vahana of Brahma, draws pilgrims who bathe in the holy lake before darshan. It is the heart of the famed Pushkar fair at Kartik Purnima, when vast crowds and a great camel fair gather by the water. Brahma of Pushkar is a rare and deeply sacred shrine.
