The Shiva Purana is counted among the Shaiva Mahapuranas and is arranged in samhitas, opening with the Vidyeshvara Samhita on the worship of the linga. Its Kotirudra Samhita carries the accounts of the Jyotirlingas, the twelve places where tradition holds Shiva stands as a pillar of light. Elsewhere it describes bhasma, rudraksha, and the observances by which a devotee keeps the days of Shiva.
